Half-round is the gutter you see in old photographs of Atlanta streets: an open, rounded trough instead of the flat-backed K-style found on most newer houses. People choose it for how it looks: on a house built before the Second World War, the curve of the gutter echoes the brackets and trim, and the roofline looks original.
We are honest about where it belongs. On a 1960s ranch or a new two-story build, K-style matched to the trim is usually the better fit, and we will say so. When the house has history, half-round is worth a serious look, and on those houses it is often done in copper. Compare both profiles on our gutter styles page.

What a half-round gutter system is made of, and why each part matters
A half-round gutter is more than a different shape. It hangs, drains and finishes differently from K-style, so every piece has to be chosen for the profile.
The trough is a true half circle. It does not have a flat back to screw against the fascia, so it rides in combination hangers. The back of each hanger fastens to the board, the gutter settles into the cradle and a spring clip locks over the front bead.
The downspouts are round too, which is a big part of the look. Round corrugated pipe in 3 or 4 inch is strong and pairs naturally with the trough. On a copper system, a smooth round downspout gives the cleanest line, though it takes a ding more readily.
The parts of a half-round system
| Part | What we install | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Trough | A rounded, open half circle, 5 or 6 inch | Its shape matches the curves and trim of older homes, so the roof edge looks original to the house |
| Hangers | Combination hangers fastened to the fascia, with a spring clip over the front lip | The trough sits in a cradle instead of hanging from nails through its face |
| Downspouts | Round, 3 or 4 inch, corrugated or smooth | Corrugated stands up to knocks better; smooth round comes in copper only and is softer |
| Outlets and heads | Optional conductor heads at the top of a downspout | They add a finished detail and catch surge water where a big roof area drains to one spot |
| Curves | Radius runs shaped to a rounded wall | A turret or curved bay keeps an unbroken gutter instead of a gap |
| Wood behind it | Fascia checked, and soft board replaced first | A new half-round run is only as solid as the board it is fastened to |
Atlanta houses where half-round looks right
- Craftsman bungalows from the 1920s in Inman Park, Grant Park and Virginia-Highland, where deep eaves and exposed rafter tails call for a softer line.
- Victorian houses and cottages in Grant Park, with porch roofs and decorative trim around the eaves.
- Older homes along the Druid Hills parkways, and historic houses near the Square in Marietta and in Newnan.
- Buckhead estates in Tuxedo Park, Peachtree Heights and around Chastain Park, where brick, stone and slate deserve a gutter that matches.
- Custom homes in Sandy Springs and Vinings designed with a traditional look.
Copper half-round, and the other options
Half-round on an older Atlanta house is often copper, formed on site with copper hangers and downspouts so the whole system weathers together. It starts out bright and slowly darkens to brown, and well kept copper can last 50 to 150 years. If copper is more than the project needs, ask your Solutionist which other half-round options fit your home, and compare metals on our specialty materials page. For a K-style run with a warm copper tone, Copper Penny colored aluminum is the budget route.
Older Atlanta homes: what we find when the old gutters come down
Plenty of houses in Grant Park, Decatur and Marietta still carry gutters hung with spikes driven through the face. As the wood swells and shrinks, the spikes back out and the run sags. Swapping to half-round is the moment to fix the board, too: soft wood is replaced through our fascia board service before the first hanger goes on, and our gutter sizes guide explains how we pick 5 or 6 inch.

Why the Brothers
Why Atlanta owners of older homes call us for half-round
A Craftsman in Inman Park and a two-story in Smyrna want different gutters. We look at the house before we talk profiles.
If K-style aluminum is the smarter call for your house or budget, your Solutionist will tell you, even when copper half-round would photograph better.
Radius gutter work is among the hardest jobs in the trade. Our crews bend half-round to follow rounded walls.

Yes. Our crews install half-round gutters across Atlanta, from Buckhead estates to Grant Park and Inman Park bungalows, and out to Sandy Springs, Dunwoody, Newnan and Griffin. We measure each run, form the gutter at your home, hang it on half-round hangers and finish it with round downspouts. The estimate is free and in writing.
Half-round is an open, rounded trough that hangs in cradle hangers and pairs with round downspouts. K-style has a flat back and a shaped face, fastens straight to the fascia and is the profile on most newer homes. People pick half-round mainly for how it looks on an older or traditional house. Both come in 5 and 6 inch.
Half-round on older Atlanta homes is often copper, with copper hangers and round copper downspouts so the system ages evenly. Copper starts bright, darkens to brown and can last many decades with care. If copper is more than you want to spend, your Solutionist will go over the other half-round options available for your house.
Yes. We can make half-round as a radius gutter that bends around a rounded part of the house, such as a turret or a curved bay. Mention any curved walls or bay windows when you book, so your Solutionist can measure them on the first visit.
Yes, and it is a common job for us in Inman Park, Grant Park and Virginia-Highland. We take down the old gutters, check the fascia and replace any soft wood before hanging the new half-round run on proper hangers. That fixes the sagging that spikes cause as the board swells and shrinks.
Yes. BroGuard fine stainless mesh can be fitted over half-round, copper included, so leaves, pine straw and sweetgum balls stay out of the trough. On older streets under big trees, it cuts down how often the gutters need hands-on cleaning. Ask about it during your free estimate.
