Douglasville grew up along the railroad in 1874, the same year it became the seat of the new Douglas County, and the oldest storefronts on Broad Street go back to the 1880s. That downtown is now a National Register historic district, with older homes on the streets around it. I-20 runs about a mile and a half south of downtown, and the land between the two, out along Douglas Boulevard and Chapel Hill Road, filled in with subdivisions as the county grew.
