Quick answer
5 Inch Gutters in Buckhead and West Atlanta, GA: A 5 inch K-style seamless gutter is the right fit for most single-family roofs, including the 1960s ranches found all over Mableton, Austell and Douglasville. The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Buckhead & West Atlanta forms them on site and pairs them with 2×3 or 3×4 inch downspouts based on roof area. Call (770) 213-1621 or book online.
Drive through Mableton, Austell or Douglasville and you will see street after street of 1960s ranches with low-slope roofs. That is the kind of roof a 5 inch gutter was made for. Formed seamless on site, it carries a summer thunderstorm off a typical ranch roof without the cost of going bigger.
Knowing where it stops being enough matters just as much. Upper roofs draining onto lower ones, long runs with a single outlet, and the big roof planes on Buckhead estates are the cases where we look at 6 inch gutters instead.
5 inch gutters around Atlanta
Replacing the original gutters on a 1960s Atlanta ranch
On most ranches and bungalows, the 5 inch size was never the problem. The joints, the hangers and the downspout layout were. Here is what changes when we put new 5 inch runs back up.
Plenty of the gutters we take down in Mableton, Austell and Smyrna are already 5 inch, and many of those houses still only need 5 inch. What gave out was everything around the trough: sectional joints that dried and split, nails that worked loose as the fascia moved, and a single downspout asked to drain an entire back eave.
New seamless 5 inch gutters on hidden hangers take care of the first two. The third comes down to layout. Runs shorter than 40 feet can drain through a single downspout, and longer ones get two or more. On the long back eave of a West Atlanta ranch, that extra outlet often decides whether the gutter keeps pace in a summer storm or overflows at the far end.
We also check what has been added since the house was built. Screened porches, room additions and reroofs all change how much water reaches certain runs, and those are the spots where 5 inch sometimes stops being enough.
Where 5 inch does the job, and where we go bigger
| Roof section | Our usual call | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Front eave of a one-story shingle roof | 5 inch | The roof’s area and pitch suit this size well |
| Rear Atlanta eave over 40 feet long | 5 inch, two downspouts | With a second outlet, water gets to a downspout faster |
| Run longer than 40 feet with no room for a second downspout | 6 inch | A single outlet must drain the entire run, so the trough needs extra space |
| Porch or lower roof taking water from a gutter above | 6 inch | That run handles two roofs, and 5 inch overflows there in a downpour |
| Steep or metal roof section | Usually 6 inch | Water comes in faster, or in more volume, than 5 inch can dependably handle |
| Shingle edge missing a correct drip edge | Checked first | Sizing for 5 inch assumes a drip edge delivers water neatly into the trough |
If a section falls into one of the step-up cases, we install 6 inch seamless gutters on just that section and keep 5 inch on the rest.
Changes made after the house was built that change the sizing
- A screened porch tied into the main roof edge.
- An addition with a roof that drains toward the original gutter.
- A garage roof now draining into the gutter on the house.
- A new metal roof replacing the shingles.
- A new patio where a downspout used to empty onto red clay, which may call for underground drainage.
- Raised beds built against the wall right where a downspout empties.
Keeping your 5 inch gutter running at full capacity
A smaller trough has less room to spare. A few handfuls of oak leaves, pine straw or sweetgum balls packed at an outlet do more harm in a 5 inch gutter than in a 6 inch, because the water has nowhere to go but over the front. Spring makes it worse: pine and oak pollen coat the trough, red clay grit settles at the outlets, and then a summer thunderstorm asks the system to move it all at once. A gutter cleaning before the summer storms keeps the full 5 inches working, and BroGuard micro-mesh keeps most of that debris out in the first place. If you are replacing the whole system, every run comes off the truck as one of our seamless gutters, cut to the length of each eave.

Posted on GoogleAtlanta Homeowners Ask About 5 Inch Gutters
Usually yes, when a few conditions are met: every run under 40 feet drains to a downspout or more, anything longer gets at least two, the gutter doesn’t spill in ordinary rain, and the asphalt shingle roof has a correct drip edge. If your house misses any of those, ask us about 6 inch.
When it hangs below another roof that has its own gutters. A lower 5 inch run taking water from above ends up handling both roofs and overflows in a downpour. Big, steep and metal roof sections also do better with 6 inch.
On most of them, yes. The 1960s ranches across Mableton, Austell, Smyrna and Douglasville are typically a good match for 5 inch, as long as the downspouts are placed right. We still measure, because a room addition or a hilly lot with heavy runoff can change the math.
A 2×3 inch downspout is standard, and we go to 3×4 inch if the size of the roof demands it. A larger downspout is a simple way to add drainage without replacing the gutter.
It is the cost-effective one, and it handles average rain well. Since Atlanta gets about 50.4 inches of rain a year and hard summer thunderstorms, we size for those storms. If one section of your roof needs more, we can run 6 inch there and keep 5 inch everywhere else.
We form 5 inch in K-style, the profile on most Atlanta homes, and in half-round, which suits many older bungalows. Aluminum comes in a range of colors, so the gutter can match the trim on a Virginia-Highland bungalow as easily as a Marietta two-story.
