Quick answer
Fascia Board in Buckhead and West Atlanta, GA: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Buckhead and West Atlanta tears out fascia that has rotted, split or soaked through, puts up sound wood or an aluminum wrap, and hangs the gutter back on fresh hangers so it stays put through the winter rains and summer storms. We serve homes across metro Atlanta and can add perforated vinyl soffit too. Call (770) 213-1621 or book online.
Fascia is the long board that runs along the eave and caps the rafter ends. Usually wood, a wood substitute or metal, it closes off the attic together with the soffit, and it is what your gutter hangers screw into.
On a lot of Atlanta homes, that board has been carrying a gutter for decades. Water that slips behind a gutter clogged with oak leaves and pine straw soaks into it a little with every storm, and the rot stays out of sight until the gutter starts to sag. New fascia often goes hand in hand with a gutter repair or a new installation.

Wrap it, replace it or hang without it: fascia options for Atlanta eaves
The right fix depends on what is behind your gutter right now. Here is how we read the eave on 1920s bungalows, 1960s ranches and newer two-story builds, and what we do with each.
Fascia carries more than people expect. Along with the gutter and every gallon in it during a summer thunderstorm, it often supports the edge of the lowest row of roofing. When water has been slipping between the gutter and the board for a few years, the damage stays hidden behind the trough until the hangers stop holding.
A lot of older Atlanta gutters were fastened with spike and ferrule: long nails driven through the face of the gutter straight into the board. Every one of those holes is a path for water into the wood. When we take an old gutter down, the board behind it tells us whether an aluminum wrap will do or the wood has to come out.
The soffit underneath matters too. Perforated vinyl soffit closes the underside of the eave so birds and insects stay out, while the vents let the attic breathe through a hot, humid Georgia summer.
What we find behind Atlanta gutters
| What is at the eave | What we recommend | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sound wood with weathered paint and old nail holes | Aluminum fascia wrap | The next drip that gets past the gutter hits metal instead of bare wood |
| Soft, split or blackened sections | Replace those sections, then wrap or paint | Hangers need solid wood to grip, and rotted board cannot carry a full gutter in a storm |
| Open rafter tails with no fascia, common on 1920s bungalows in Virginia-Highland and Inman Park | Add fascia, build out the overhang, or use roof straps | The choice depends on the roof covering and how much of the original look you want to keep |
| Tile, slate or wood shake roof with no fascia | Add fascia or build out the overhang | Roof straps are not recommended on these roofs, which can crack or split where a strap sits |
| Missing, broken or unvented soffit | Perforated vinyl soffit | Closes the attic to pests while keeping air moving |
Why a solid board beats hanging from rafter tails
- Screws into fascia bite across the grain. Screws into rafter ends go into end grain, which holds far less.
- A continuous board stiffens the whole run, so the gutter keeps its line and its pitch.
- Fascia gives the soffit something to fasten to, which closes off the attic.
- Open rafters leave gaps where insects and animals find their way in.
- Roof straps work, but they are not as strong as fascia and they show from the street.
- On an older shingle roof, lifting shingles to slide a strap underneath can break them, so straps usually sit on top.
How to check your fascia from the ground
- Sight down the gutter line.Stand at the end of the house and look along the eave. A gutter that waves or dips often means the board behind it is giving way.
- Look at the paint right below the gutter.Peeling, bubbling or dark streaks at that line mean water has been getting behind the trough.
- Look up under the eave.Gaps in the soffit, droppings or nesting material mean the eave is open to animals.
Fixing what caused it
New wood only lasts if the water stops reaching it. With the old gutter already down, it is often the right moment for a seamless gutter formed on site, with no mid-run joints to drip on the new board. If the gutter is still sound, gutter repair handles the pitch and seams that let water behind it, and the maintenance program keeps the trough clear so it never backs up into the wood again. Fascia is one of three services in our exterior solutions, alongside buried drainage and under-deck ceilings.

Why the Brothers
Why Buckhead and West Atlanta Homeowners Call the Brothers
Fascia rot hides under the trough. Because taking gutters down and putting them up is our whole trade, we find it before it fails.
There is no coordinating a carpenter with a gutter installer. The same crew replaces the wood and rehangs the system.
From bungalow rafter tails in Grant Park to ranch eaves in Mableton, we have a way to hang gutters on homes with or without fascia.

It is the mounting surface. Gutter hangers fasten into the fascia, and solid wood there is what lets a gutter carry its full load of rain and wet debris in a storm without pulling away from the house.
Often you cannot without taking the gutter down. If water has been slipping down between the gutter and the board for any length of time, assume some rot. Peeling paint, spots that feel soft when pressed, and a gutter dipping between hangers are other clues, and a Solutionist checks for all of them during a free estimate.
Yes, when the wood underneath is still sound. Aluminum fascia wrap comes in multiple sizes and covers the board. If the wood is too far gone, we replace it, and either way the gutter goes back up on new hangers.
Yes. Many older homes were built with deep overhangs and open rafter tails instead of fascia, on the idea that the overhang throws water clear of the walls. It often does not. One option is a roof strap, which clips into a hidden hanger inside the gutter and fastens up onto the roof. That works on many roofs, but we do not recommend straps on slate, tile or cedar shingle, so on those we extend the overhang and add a fascia board.
It comes down to how often the board gets wet and how long it stays that way. Gutters that overflow behind the trough and homes that went years between cleanings are the usual culprits. Along the long, low eaves of 1960s ranch homes across West Atlanta, one section packed with oak leaves can soak the board behind it in every storm.
Yes. If the soffit is damaged or missing, we install perforated vinyl soffit. Those small vents let the attic breathe, which takes some of the heat out of the house during a long, humid Atlanta summer.
A gutter loaded with rain and wet leaves is heavy, and soft wood cannot keep the hanger screws tight under that weight. The screws loosen, the run dips, and the slope stops carrying water to the downspout. New board and new hangers restore the pitch.
