Vinings has never been incorporated. It is a census-designated community in Cobb County, across the Chattahoochee from Buckhead, and its story starts with Hardy Pace, who ran Pace’s Ferry over the river around 1830. When the Western and Atlantic Railroad was built through, William H. Vining, an assistant to the chief engineer, oversaw the bridge here, and the station took his name. Union troops arrived in July 1864, and General O. O. Howard used the Pace house as his headquarters. A one-lane bridge replaced the ferry in 1904, the same year Vinings was recognized as a community. Today Vinings Mountain rises just behind the old village, Paces Ferry Road still carries traffic east and west, and houses, townhomes and condos sit on steep, wooded ground that drains toward the river.
