Newnan has been the Coweta County seat since 1828, named for General Daniel Newnan, and its motto, the City of Homes, still fits. The town came through the Civil War largely untouched, so a lot of antebellum architecture survives. The city counts seven historic districts: Downtown and College-Temple, both laid out in 1828; Greenville-LaGrange, about 61 acres that include the antebellum Buena Vista house; Cole Town, known for woodwork from the R.D. Cole Company; Platinum Point; the Newnan Cotton Mill and Mill Village; and Chalk Level. The Neo-Greek Revival courthouse downtown dates to 1904. On the night of March 25 into March 26, 2021, an EF4 tornado crossed Newnan with winds of 170 mph, damaged homes in the historic district and badly damaged Newnan High School, which has since been rebuilt.
