Kirkwood is a historic streetcar suburb on the east side of Atlanta, set entirely in DeKalb County between DeKalb Avenue and Memorial Drive, and between Montgomery Street and 1st Avenue. Homes started going up in the 1870s, and an early tour book called it an area of beautiful suburban villas. By 1910 streetcars ran express service to Atlanta three times a day. Kirkwood was its own town from 1899, with a council, a mayor, a water system and a fire department. The Kirkwood Historic District, with 1,788 contributing buildings, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, and Bessie Branham Park and Gilliam Park anchor the neighborhood.
