Gutters for a creek town that knows what water can do

Austell was incorporated in 1885 and named for General Alfred Austell, who pushed to bring railroads through the South, and the city still sits where two Norfolk Southern lines split. Most of it lies in Cobb County, with a small piece crossing into Douglas County. Sweetwater Creek bends around the north and east sides of downtown on its way to the Chattahoochee, and in September 2009 it showed what it could do: the gauge at Austell crested at 30.8 feet against a 10 foot flood stage, and about 700 houses in the city took on water. Older homes near downtown, ranches on the side streets and newer subdivisions all share the same hilly red clay ground under oaks and pines.

Our shop is at 561 Thornton Rd, Suite E, in Lithia Springs, and Thornton Road runs from there up to Austell, so the crew is a short drive away. Matthew Prewett owns the franchise. We clean and flush gutters, reseal leaking seams, rehang sagging runs, form new gutters on site, replace soft fascia and install BroGuard fine metal mesh. On ranches with long, low eaves and on two-story homes alike, 6-inch gutters move more water per foot than the 5-inch runs on many older houses. The estimate is free and written.

Metro Atlanta averages about 50.4 inches of rain a year (NOAA), and the wettest stretches come in winter and summer. A gutter system cannot keep a creek in its banks, but it does control the roof water landing right next to your foundation, and on a low Austell lot that matters. Between storms, leaves, pollen and clay grit pile up at the outlets. Our maintenance program clears them on a schedule, so the next hard rain leaves the roof the way it should.

Austell Gutter Questions, Answered

Can gutters help protect my Austell home from flooding?

Gutters handle roof water, not creek water, so they will not stop Sweetwater Creek when it leaves its banks. What they can do is keep the rain that lands on your roof from soaking the ground at your foundation. We size the gutters for heavy storms and use downspout extensions or underground drainage to move that water to a spot where it can spread out. For floodplain questions, check the FEMA flood map for your address.

Do you work in both the Cobb and Douglas County parts of Austell?

Yes. Most of Austell is in Cobb County and a small part reaches into Douglas County, and we serve both. Our base on Thornton Road in Lithia Springs is in Douglas County, close to the city line, so either side of town is a short trip for the crew. The estimate is free and written either way.

What size gutters does an Austell ranch house need?

Many single-story ranches do fine with 5-inch seamless gutters and 2×3 downspouts if the roof is modest and the runs are short. Long runs, steep pitches, valleys that dump onto one corner or a second story usually call for 6-inch gutters with 3×4 downspouts. Runs over about 40 feet should get a second downspout. We measure the roof before we recommend anything.

When should I schedule gutter cleaning in Austell?

Late fall, after the oaks finish dropping, is the most important visit, because winter is one of the wettest stretches of the year here. A second visit in late spring clears out catkins and pine pollen before the summer storms. Homes under heavy canopy may need a check in between. Our maintenance program books those visits for you.

Do you serve homes near Six Flags and Sweetwater Creek?

Yes. We work the neighborhoods around downtown Austell and along Sweetwater Creek, the streets off U.S. 78 and Thornton Road, and homes on the 30168 side near Six Flags Over Georgia, which has an Austell address. Wherever you are, the estimate is free and written, and the same local team does the job.
