Gutters for Marietta’s historic rooflines and mountain-side lots

Marietta is the county seat of Cobb County, recognized by the state in 1834 and built around the Square, where Glover Park still sits in the middle of town. Kilpatrick’s troops burned much of Marietta in November 1864, but the houses that came before and after give the city some of the most complicated rooflines in metro Atlanta. The Church Street and Cherokee Street Historic District alone covers about 76 acres of homes built from around 1843 to 1935: Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne towers and turrets, Folk Victorian cottages and Craftsman bungalows. Whitlock Avenue, Washington Avenue and Northwest Marietta have historic districts of their own. West of town, the land climbs toward Kennesaw Mountain, and newer neighborhoods sit on slopes where every storm sends water downhill.

Matthew Prewett owns The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Buckhead and West Atlanta and runs it from Thornton Road in Lithia Springs, a straight shot up to Marietta for our crews. Older Marietta houses rarely have one simple eave. Intersecting gables and roof valleys dump a lot of water into a short stretch of gutter, so we look at where each valley lands before we size anything. On those roofs, 6-inch gutters and a downspout placed near the valley usually fix the overflow for good. Every estimate is free and written.

Atlanta averages about 50.4 inches of rain a year (NOAA), with the wettest stretches in winter and summer. In Marietta that means slow, all-day rains from December into March, then summer thunderstorms that drop a lot of water in an hour. The big oaks along the historic streets drop leaves in fall and catkins in spring, pines add straw year round, and sweetgum balls roll into the corners. A clogged valley corner on a Queen Anne roof overflows right onto the porch. Our maintenance program times visits around the leaf drop and the spring pollen, so the corners stay clear.

How it works

How a Marietta gutter job runs

  1. 1Call or book online

Tell us about the house: the street, the age of the home and where water is going wrong. A local team member picks up.

  2. 2Roofline walkthrough

A Solutionist traces each valley, eave and downspout, checks the fascia, then puts the estimate in writing.

  3. 3Formed and hung on site

The truck forms each run to length at your curb, and cleaning or repairs get finished the same visit when possible.

  4. 4Flush test and clean-up

Every downspout gets water run through it while you watch, and the yard is left cleaner than we found it.

Why the Brothers

Why Marietta Homeowners Call the Brothers

01Historic roof experience

Turrets, gables and rafter tails need a plan. We fit each run to the roof instead of forcing one profile on it.

02Valley overflow fixes

Most porch soakings start at a valley. Placement and sizing stop the overflow without changing the look of the house.

03Built for hillside runoff

Many west Marietta lots slope. We send water where it can spread out, not toward the foundation.

Marietta Gutter Questions, Answered

Can you put seamless gutters on a Queen Anne or Victorian house in Marietta?

Yes. Homes in the Church Street and Cherokee Street district often have towers, intersecting gables and several roof valleys. We measure every eave, form each run on site to its exact length, and place downspouts where the valleys concentrate water. Copper is an option for owners who want the gutters to suit the age of the house.

Why does water pour over my gutter at one corner every time it rains?

On many Marietta roofs, that corner sits under a roof valley, where two slopes feed a short stretch of gutter. The run is either too small, clogged or missing a nearby downspout. Clearing the corner, adding a downspout close to the valley or stepping up to a 6-inch gutter usually stops it.

My Craftsman bungalow has exposed rafter tails. How do gutters attach?

Bungalows with open eaves often have no continuous fascia board, so the gutter cannot simply be screwed along a straight board. We look at the eave first, then choose a mounting approach that holds the run securely and keeps the look of the house. If any wood behind it is soft, we replace it before the gutter goes up.

Are copper gutters a good choice for an older Marietta home?

They can be. Copper is one of the materials we form on site, and many owners of older homes near the Square like how it weathers to a darker tone that fits a 19th century house. Aluminum in a color matched to the trim is the other common choice. On the walkthrough we price both, so you can decide with real numbers in hand.

Which parts of Marietta do you serve?

Our crews work Marietta Square and the historic districts around it, Northwest Marietta, the streets off Whitlock Avenue toward Kennesaw Mountain, and west and south Marietta, covering ZIP codes 30008, 30060, 30063 and 30064. Every estimate is free and written, and the crews come up from our base on Thornton Road in Lithia Springs.
