Gutters Under Atlanta’s Tree Canopy: How Often to Clean Them

Quick answer

How often should you clean gutters in Atlanta? Twice a year is the minimum for most Atlanta homes, and three or four times for homes under big oaks or pines. Atlanta’s trees drop pollen, needles, leaves and sweetgum balls through most of the year, and NOAA’s normals show rain in every month, between 3.28 and 4.75 inches, so there is no dry season to wait for. The canopy

Why Atlanta gutters fill up so fast

Atlanta is known as the city in a forest for good reason. All that shade is great in July and hard on gutters the rest of the year.

A Georgia Tech study done for the City of Atlanta measured tree canopy over 47.9 percent of the land inside the city limits, using 2008 satellite imagery. Trees Atlanta keeps that study and the later assessments online.

In neighborhoods like Buckhead, Druid Hills and Virginia-Highland, that canopy often hangs right over the roof. Every one of those trees drops something into the gutters, and they do not all drop at the same time.

That is the real reason Atlanta gutters clog: not one big fall, but a steady stream of debris from different trees through most of the year.

The debris calendar

What Atlanta trees drop, and when

Each tree has its own season. Put them together and there are only a few months a year when nothing is landing in the gutters.

What fallsWhenWhat it does in a gutter
Oak flowers and pollenSpringStringy catkins and yellow pollen mix with rain into a paste that coats the trough
Pine needlesFall into early winterNeedles mat across the gutter and form a dam ahead of the outlet
Oak, maple and poplar leavesLate fallBroad leaves cover the outlets and hold wet debris in place
Sweetgum ballsFall through winterSpiky seed balls roll to the low point and wedge in downspout elbows
Seeds, twigs and roof gritAll yearFill the gaps between the bigger debris and turn it into a solid plug

The spring pollen is easy to underestimate. Oak flowers fall in long strings, and when the first spring storms hit, they wash into the gutters and stick. If the fall cleaning was the last one, the gutters go into the spring rains already half full.

The rain

Atlanta has no dry season to wait for

In a lot of places you can clean the gutters before the rainy season and relax. In Atlanta, the rainy season is the whole year.

NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 climate normals for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport put the yearly average at 50.43 inches. The wettest month is July at 4.75 inches and the driest is October at 3.28 inches. Every month gets more than 3 inches.

The rain also comes hard. Pulled from the NOAA Precipitation Frequency Data Server for Buckhead, NOAA Atlas 14 puts the hardest hour you should expect in a typical year at 1.31 inches, with five minute bursts near 4.82 inches an hour. A gutter with packed outlets cannot keep up with that, and the water goes over the front edge onto the beds, the walkway and the foundation.

On sloped lots in West Atlanta, Smyrna and Vinings, that overflow also runs downhill toward the house or a neighbor. Our hillside lot gutter drainage page covers where that water should go.

The plan

How often to clean, based on your trees

The right schedule depends on what is growing over your roof. Here is how we size it up on a free estimate.

Your yardHow often to cleanBest timing
Few trees near the roofTwice a yearAfter the spring pollen and after leaf fall
Hardwoods over the roofTwo or three times a yearLate spring, late fall and again in midwinter if leaves were late
Pines over the roofThree times a yearSpring, late fall and early winter
Oaks, pines and sweetgums togetherThree or four times a year, or gutter guardsSpring, summer, late fall and early winter
  • Gutters cleaned after the spring pollen and again after the leaves are down.
  • Every downspout flushed, including the elbows at the bottom.
  • No water standing in the gutters a day after the rain.
  • Downspouts carry water away from the foundation.

If three or four cleanings a year sounds like a lot, it is. That is where BroGuard gutter guards earn their keep, with a fine stainless mesh that keeps needles, leaves and sweetgum balls out of the trough. We clean, repair and guard gutters across Buckhead, Brookhaven, Sandy Springs, Decatur, Smyrna and Vinings. Start with our gutter cleaning page.

Local tip: look at the downspout elbows at ground level after the sweetgum balls start falling. They roll to the low point and wedge in the bend, so a downspout can be blocked even when the gutter above looks clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should gutters be cleaned in Atlanta?

Twice a year at minimum, after the spring pollen and after the fall leaves. Homes under oaks, pines or sweetgums often need three or four cleanings a year, or gutter guards.

When is the best time to clean gutters in Atlanta?

Late spring, once the oak pollen and flowers have fallen, and late fall, once the leaves and pine needles are down. Atlanta gets rain every month, so there is no dry season to wait for.

How much rain does Atlanta get?

NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals put Hartsfield-Jackson at 50.43 inches a year. July is the wettest month at 4.75 inches and October the driest at 3.28 inches.

Do pine needles clog gutters?

Yes. Pine needles mat together across the gutter and form a dam in front of the outlet. They are also small enough to slip through many basic gutter guards, which is why we use a fine stainless mesh.

Can sweetgum balls block a downspout?

Yes. Sweetgum balls roll to the lowest point in the gutter and wedge in the downspout or its elbows. A downspout flush during cleaning is the only way to be sure they are clear.
