Quick answer

Underground Gutter Drainage in Atlanta, GA: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Buckhead and West Atlanta takes downspouts underground, piping roof water through buried lines to a safe outlet such as daylight, a drywell or a storm connection, so it stays off foundations, planting beds and walkways from Buckhead to Marietta and Douglasville. New pipe is laid with our drainage partners, and we stay your point of contact. Call (770) 213-1621 or book online.

A downspout that empties at the base of the wall only moves the problem a few feet. The water follows the backfill down along the foundation, collects against the slab, and slowly undermines patios, steps and walkways. Underground drainage sends it through buried lines instead and releases it where it can do no harm.

In metro Atlanta, where red clay sheds a summer downpour instead of soaking it up, that matters more than the yearly totals suggest. It works best paired with clean gutters and a BroGuard mesh guard, so pine straw and grit never reach the pipe.

Getting downspout water off your slab, your walkways and your lot

Where each downspout empties decides where the trouble starts. Here is how we choose a route and an outlet, how to spot a buried line that has stopped working, and how to keep a new one from clogging.

Atlanta gets about 50 inches of rain a year, with long soaking winter rains and short, heavy summer thunderstorms, and every downspout on the house runs hard. Red clay does not take that water in quickly, so a stream at the base of the wall runs along the foundation and across the lot. Over a few seasons it washes out planting beds, cracks patio edges and lifts walkway panels and steps.

There is a safety side as well. A downspout that drains across a driveway or the front walk leaves a slick sheet of water right where people step. Taking it underground clears that path, and when a driveway is in the way, we can often reroute the downspout to another corner first so nobody has to cut the concrete.

New lines are laid by our drainage partners, while the Lithia Springs team runs the project from the estimate to the final water test. Existing buried drains get checked on the same visit.

Signs a buried drain has stopped working

  • The ground around the drain inlet stays soft or wet days after a storm.
  • Puddles form along the path of the buried line.
  • The gutter or downspout backs up and spills even right after a cleaning.
  • You can see leaves or grit packed into the drain opening.
  • The outlet stays dry while the downspout above it is running.

Protect the pipe before it goes in the ground

A clog at the gutter is a quick cleaning. A clog three feet into a buried line means drain-clearing equipment and a separate bill, with no promise it stays clear. That is why we treat underground drainage as the last of three parts that work together:

  1. A gutter that carries the storm.Properly sized gutters that hold their pitch, so water reaches the downspout instead of spilling mid-run. If yours sags or leaks, gutter repair comes first, because overflow skips the drain completely.
  2. A guard that stops the debris.BroGuard stainless micro-mesh keeps oak leaves, pine straw, sweetgum balls and red clay grit out of the trough, so they never wash into the pipe.
  3. A buried line to a safe outlet. With clean water coming down, the line only has to carry rain, which is the job it was built for.

Keep the water moving from the roof edge all the way to the outlet.

How it works

Following the Water Off Your Lot

  1. 1Trace each downspout

A Solutionist notes where every downspout empties and where water collects after rain.

  2. 2Choose the route

We pick a path and an outlet that keep water away from the foundation and hardscape.

  3. 3Lay the line

New buried pipe goes in with our drainage partners and ties into the downspouts.

  4. 4Run a test

Water goes down each downspout so we can confirm the line drains freely.

Why the Brothers

Why Buckhead to Douglasville Homeowners Call the Brothers

01We start at the roof

Most drainage problems begin with a gutter that is undersized or clogged. We fix the source before burying anything.

02One contact, start to finish

When a drainage partner lays new pipe, the Lithia Springs team still runs the project and answers your calls.

03Protecting what is below

Foundations, patios, steps and walkways all suffer when downspouts dump at the wall. Buried lines move the water past them.

Underground Drainage Questions, Answered

Where does underground drainage send the water?

From each downspout, a buried pipe runs to an outlet well away from the house: open ground where it can daylight, a drywell, or a storm connection. That keeps it off the foundation, out of the planting beds and away from walkways.

How do I know if my underground drain is clogged?

Watch for water pooling in the yard along the line, a soggy patch around the drain opening, or gutters that overflow again right after a cleaning. Now and then you can see the blockage right at the drain opening. When in doubt, have a Solutionist take a look during a free estimate.

Can you clean underground drains I already have?

In many cases. At participating Brothers locations, clearing existing underground drains can be added to a gutter cleaning, so call (770) 213-1621 to confirm for your address and tell us about the buried lines when you book. If a cleaning will not fix the line, you will hear what the next step is.

What are underground gutter drains made of?

Downspouts and drains are built to last, using materials such as stainless steel, aluminum, PVC or copper. Even durable lines clog if leaves and grit get in, which is why keeping the gutters above them clean matters.

What is the gutter trifecta?

Three things working together: gutters sized right and in good repair, a mesh guard covering every run, and buried drainage that takes the water well away from the house. That combination is the strongest protection a home can have. The guard is there because a clog underground usually means hiring a drain routing company, which is costly and not guaranteed.

Do you have to tear up my driveway to run drainage?

Often not. A common fix is to move the downspout to another side of the house and go underground from there, where the soil is easier to dig. If a downspout on your Smyrna or Marietta home empties right onto the driveway, rerouting is usually the first option we look at, and it also stops water from running across concrete that turns slick in a storm.

Does underground drainage make sense on a hilly lot in Buckhead or Vinings?

Yes. On a slope, roof water should go to a controlled outlet rather than sheeting across the yard, where it can wash out red clay and saturate the ground near the house. Buried lines take it somewhere safe, and on clay we usually favor daylight or a storm connection over a drywell. If you want it in before summer storm season, ask during a spring estimate.
