Quick answer
Pollen season gutters in Buckhead and West Atlanta: The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Buckhead & West Atlanta schedules the spring gutter cleaning for the first half of May, after the oaks have dropped their catkins and the worst of the yellow pine film has washed down. In 2026 the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma count peaked at 6,563 on March 23 with pine at the top of the tree list, oak led that list on nearly every report from late March to mid April, and pine stayed among the top trees into late May. Pollen, Catkins and Gutters
Spring pollen does not stay on the roof. It ends up in the gutter.
Buckhead and Brookhaven sit under a heavy, mature oak canopy: big trees shading estate roofs along West Paces Ferry Road, in Tuxedo Park and Peachtree Heights, around Chastain Park and through Historic Brookhaven. Head west into Mableton, Austell, Lithia Springs and Douglasville and more of the canopy is pine. Both shed in spring. The pines put out the yellow film that coats cars, decks and shingles, and the oaks hang stringy catkins that let go once their pollen is spent.
Rain is what moves it into the trough. In Buckhead, a spring shower rinses the film off a big multi-gable roof and carries it down the valleys with the catkins, where it settles into a wet, mustard-colored sludge at the outlets. UGA Extension forester Kim Coder has explained that pollen carries nitrogen and that bacteria and fungi feed on it as it builds up, which is why a gutter left holding it into summer can turn dark and slimy with growth. The same thing happens under the oaks in Brookhaven, where catkins mat over strainers and downspout openings. Out west in Douglasvilleand the rest of Douglas County, pine pollen and spent needles collect in long ranch and two-story runs that drain onto red clay.
The Brothers That Just Do Gutters Buckhead & West Atlanta is owned by Matthew Prewett, and our crews work out of Thornton Road in Lithia Springs. After pollen season we clean by hand, flush every downspout, and look for standing water and growth in the trough. We install seamless aluminum and copper gutters, and fit BroGuard fine metal mesh where oaks and pines hang over the roof.

Local Data
Pollen season facts from the 2026 count
Four facts from Atlanta Allergy & Asthma’s 2026 daily reports and tree pollen scale, checked as of October 2026.
- 2026 season high
- 6,563The highest daily total of 2026, set March 23, with pine first among the trees, followed by oak, mulberry, sweet gum and sycamore.
- Oak on top
- 17 of 18 daysOak was the top tree on 17 of the 18 daily reports from March 26 to April 12, 2026, while the oaks were shedding and catkins began to fall.
- Pine in the count
- Feb to MayPine was among the top tree contributors from the first February report through the end of May 2026, so the yellow film keeps landing long after the peak.
- Tree scale
- 90+ is highOn the station’s tree scale, 90 to 1,499 grains is high. The 2026 total count last went above 90 on May 1, at 109.
- Our recommendation
- Our recommendation:Book the spring cleaning for the first half of May, after the catkins are down and before summer thunderstorms, and on heavy oak lots have the outlets checked once in early April.

Why the Brothers
Why Homeowners from Buckhead to Douglasville Pick the Brothers
BroGuard fine mesh stops catkins and needles. Pollen is finer than any mesh: some rinses through, some dries on top, and we check it at maintenance visits.
Buckhead estates with long valleys and tall eaves need gutter size and downspout count planned around the roof, not guessed at.
On sloped lots from Vinings to Powder Springs, we send downspouts away from the foundation so spring rain does not wash red clay against the house.

In 2026, Atlanta Allergy & Asthma, the only National Allergy Bureau certified counting station in the Atlanta area, listed pine among its top tree pollens from early February through the end of May. The heaviest single day was March 23, at 6,563 grains per cubic meter, with pine leading the tree list. Oak then took over as the top tree from late March into mid April.
They are oak catkins, the male flowers that release oak pollen. Once the pollen is spent, the catkins drop by the thousands onto roofs and into gutters. In Buckhead and Brookhaven, where big oaks hang over the roof, they mat over outlets and downspout openings and hold the yellow pine film in place, so a gutter can back up in an ordinary spring rain.
Pollen washed into the gutter sits in any standing water along with catkins and leaves. UGA Extension forester Kim Coder has explained that pollen carries nitrogen and that bacteria and fungi feed on it as it builds up. Gutters that hold water in low spots or behind a clogged outlet give that growth a place to live, so the fix is a cleaning plus re-pitching the run or clearing whatever is holding the water.
No gutter guard stops pollen; the grains are far too small. What BroGuard fine metal mesh does on a Buckhead or West Atlanta home is keep oak catkins, pine needles and leaves out of the trough, which removes most of the material that turns pollen into sludge. Some pollen still rinses through and some can dry as a film on the mesh, so we check guards at maintenance visits.
For most Buckhead, Brookhaven and West Atlanta homes, the first half of May. In 2026 the Atlanta Allergy & Asthma total count last went above 90 on May 1 and stayed below that through the summer. Cleaning in early May clears the catkins and sludge before the summer thunderstorms, and homes under heavy oak can add a quick outlet check in early April.
